Powerful Probe Creation Facilities
InterMapper includes over 200 probes that monitor a wide range of network devices. (Probes are software plug-ins that
can test a particular kind of equipment.)
InterMapper users have also created and contributed dozens of probes that monitor applications, servers, wireless and
telecommunications equipment, environmental monitors, printers, UPS’s and storage devices, switches, routers,
firewalls, and more. The Community Probes section of the site
makes those probes available to all InterMapper users.
In addition, InterMapper can also run Nagios® and Big Brother™ plug-ins directly. There are hundreds of
these available on the Internet, usually at no cost.
However, if none of these can handle your equipment, you can extend InterMapper’s network monitoring capabilities by creating your own probes.
Probes are simply text files that specify the SNMP variables to collect, or a script that will run and collect data
from the device. Scripts can be written in any language, including Python, Perl, C or C++, VisualBasic script, or
InterMapper’s own TCP scripting language.
